Description

Enjoy a self-guided tour of the Devonport Column.

We’ve re-opened Devonport Column as part of our Devonport 200 commemorations!

The Column was built with the permission of King George IV between 1824 – 1827 to commemorate the establishment of Devonport as a separate town. This 124ft structure has also provided many services to the Devonport community including as a WWII fire watch station.

Now it is open once more to provide visitors with some of the most spectacular views across Devonport, Plymouth and the Tamar!

All visits commence at the Market Hall at the allotted time from where visitors will be escorted to the column for their self-guided tour.

  • All visits are limited to 12 people, booked in advance, and are self-guided.
  • Access to the top of the column is via a narrow spiral staircase of 137 stone steps. We advise visitors to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and to bear in mind the physical nature of the ascent before booking.
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Unfortunately, because of the historic nature of the column we are sorry to say it is not accessible to all.
  • We reserve the right to cancel visits due to unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather.
